Bridge to be well lit

PA Auckland A glowing Auckland Harbour Bridge might commemorate more than just the 1990 celebrations. Auckland Electric Power Board members on Monday reversed a decision not to light the bridge to mark 150 years of pakeha settlement, deciding they could possibly do it in conjunction with the neighbouring Waitemata Electric Power Board. Members had refused an application from the 1990 Commission, but one member, Suzanne Corbett, said it was turned down because the artist’s impression was so unpleasant. “The project that was shown to us was without doubt the most extraordinarily ugly and vulgar thing I’ve ever seen in my life,” she said. The board will look at a joint venture with the Waitemata power board, as the bridge was the place where they “joined hands.” The Waitemata board’s chairman, Mr Ray Nola, said the idea was already under consideration. The Auckland board’s general manager, Mr Peter Cebalo, said the project, probably costing hundreds of thousands of dollars, would make sense if it was more permanent.
