Correspondence school cut
Sir,—On August 26, I received from the Correspondence School, where I study accounting and biology, a letter saying: ",.. the Department of Education has instructed the Correspondence School to make a S2M budget cut this financial year by reducing the adult part-time roll by half, to 5250.” This is a horrible prospect for the 5250 part-time students who will have to be turned away from the Correspondence School next year. For many people (e.g., shift workers, rural adult students, solo parents, and other house-bound students), the Correspondence School offers a second chance at education at a price New Zealanders can afford. Cut-backs of this size are frightening. When are these “necessary” cut-backs going to cease? Do education, health, police and other essential services have to pay for the frigates we seem to need so badly?— Yours, etc., HELEN VAN ZANTEN. August 28, 1989.
