Soccer shield Nearly 80 boys from Canterbury, Southland and Waikato are taking part in the 1989 Centennial Shield soccer competition this week. The Boys’ Brigade tournament involves boys aged 8 to 11 in 10 games mainly at Spreydon Domain.
The winner will play Waikato in the ground final at QEH Park on Saturday. Keep N.Z. Beautiful Youth groups might start planning communityservice projects for Keep New Zealand Beautiful Week (October 7 to 14).
The Christchurch Clean and Beautiful Award is presented each year to the group judged to have carried out the best project by the Keep Christchurch Beautiful campaign.
Projects should have an environmental theme. They have included picking up litter in Thompson Park and along the banks
of the Avon River, tidying the gardens of the local church and gardening for the elderly. Certificates of appreciation are awarded and the winner holds a shield for 12 months. Youth Centre The Cinerama Youth Centre is appealing to groups to participate in a
Mardi Gras in North Hagley Park on October 8. Billed as a family event with particular appeal to young people it will raise funds for Youth Centre activities. Anyone wanting to perform at the event, help with fund-raising or put up a stall or display, should contact the Cinerama Youth Centre.
