Holiday activities

All Holiday activities listed below are for the first week of the primary school holidays. Listings for the second week will appear from Monday, September 4. Activities are subject to change without notice.

Y.M.C.A.,

Christchurch

The Y has 16 programmes for the August school holidays, now open for bookings. In the first week, to September 1, programmes are based at City for ages 8-12 and ages 5-8; the New Brighton Scout Den; Holmes Park Scout Den; Upper Riccarton; Hoon Hay Scout Den; the Y Bryndwr, 286 Greers Road, for ages 8-12 and ages 5-8. Activities, which have a fee, include ice skating, rollerskating, swimming, hydroslide,, new games, treasure hunts, skateboarding and mystery visits. Brochures may be picked up from the Y City or Bryndwr. The Y is also offering an overnight camp for ages 8-14, “The Great Wainui Caper” at their camp in Wainui. Volunteers aged 15 or over are sought to assist with programmes and camps. Training will be provided.

Orana Park Wildlife Trust, McLeans Island Road: Open daily, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Last admission at 4.30 p.m. Includes an African Lion Reserve and Kiwi House. See also spider monkeys, parrots, white rhinos, kangaroos, wolves, tigers, camels, zebras, giraffe as well as other unusual and endangered species. View the animals in natural surroundings. Picnic tables and free gas barbecues provided, drinks, snacks, and souvenirs from the kiosk. A bus leaves Cathedral Square at 12 noon daily. Holiday special: Harold’s Birthday. Celebrations include competitions, stalls and events daily. Free admission for

children up to 14 years. Willowbank Wildlife Reserve, Hussey Road (off Gardiners Road) Harewood: Open daily, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., adults $6.50, children $3. Includes a farmyard of old and rare breeds of domestic livestock. See mountain lions, chimpanzees, monkeys, lemurs, otters, camels, trout ponds, aviaries, pre-European Maori village. Food is available to feed the birds and animals. Special holiday activities include pony and donkey rides, while today and tomorrow the restaurant has a three course meal for $25 including free entry to the park. For every two adults, one child under 10 years dines free.

Outdoor Recreation Centre, the Christchurch Arts Centre: Open weekdays, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., information on outdoor recreation activities in Canterbury and the South Island. Information on a wide range of pursuits, from picnicking to potholing, tramping and skiing, horseriding to bird and whale watching. Also: clubs, gear hire, commercial operators, camping, accommodation and transport.

MUSEUMS Royal New Zealand Air Force Museum,

R.N.Z.A.F. Base, Wigram, Main South Road: Daily, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (Sundays, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.). The Air Force story told with classic aircraft and equipment dramatically displayed. Audio-visual history introduction. Also life-like figures, engines, armaments, militaria, photos, art, Memorial Window. Suitable for ages 7 and upwards, adult $7, children $2, family $l5. Cafeteria and souvenirs. Take a No. 25 or No. 8 bus from the Square. Look for the Museum neon sign at Wigram.

Yaldhurst Transport Museum, first turn right past the Yaldhurst Hotel on the Main West Coast Road; open every day, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Displays of vintage and veteran cars, motor-cycles, and fire engines, and printing demonstrations. Adults $5.50, children $2. Ferrymead Historic Park, 269 Bridle Path Road: Daily, 10 a.m. to 4.30 p.m., tram, train and horse and cart rides, plus working Edwardian Village Exhibits. The Ferrymead Quiz — an activity book for children to complete in the Park. Adults, $6, children $3, family, $l6. A multi-visit ticket is also available.

Suitable for all ages, the 11 a.m. sessions are for primary/intermediate school age and 2 p.m. sessions for secondary school pupils.
