Wagging tongues ...
NZPA-PA London A problem shared is a problem halved — unless you live in the English countryside. There village gossips can make it impossible for friendly country folk to share their troubles with a neighbour over a cup of tea. For close village relationships act as a barrier when it comes to deeply personal problems, experts have found. The country’s first rural counselling service is about to open with five trained workers tackling the personal and intimate problems of country folk. One of the counsellors explained: “The image of the country as a place
where everyone knows each other and can discuss their troubles over the garden fence is on the whole accurate. “But this also leads to a unique problem in country areas when it comes to an embarrassing or socially unacceptable problem. Then it can be impossible to talk about it in a small community where everyone knows each other. “The fear of village gossip is one problem, and people want to talk to a stranger who they know they may not have to meet again.” The Derwent rural counselling service is to open its doors in Bakewell, Derbyshire, each Monday for a trial run of six months.
