‘Commonwealth Avenue’ mooted
KAY FORRESTER
A revamped Manchester Street — renamed Commonwealth Avenue — could become a showpiece for the city, says a Christchurch City councillor, Cr David Cox.
He wants the council to consider dressing up the street in time for the Commonwealth Law Ministers’ Conference at the Christchurch >.Town Hall in April next year.. He envisages flagpoles along the
street carrying the flags of countries around the world, with a plaque describing each flag. “Manchester Street is not an attractive part of town,” he said.
"The commercial premises 'there don’t get much attention from the council.” “If we did some work on the street and turned it into an avenue, people would find it another attraction for Christchurch,” he said. It is believed the conference at
the Town Hall will be the first meeting in New Zealand of the Commonwealth Secretariat. Arrangements will have to be made to fly the flags of the 50 attending countries at the Town Hall. Cr Cox has specifically asked the council to examine Manchester Street as the site of a Commonwealth avenue, but officers will also look -at a section of Kilmore Street that runs past the Town Hall.
