Crowds for book sale

CLARE BARRY

Crowd control was needed at the Canterbury Public Library yesterday as 200 people at a time crammed into the Stringleman Room for a used book sale.

Staff and members of Friends of the Library tried to keep the stairwell clear while the sale was on.

The suburban services librarian at the library, Mr Neil Fitzgerald, estimated that between 2000 and 3000 people attended the sale, which will con-

tinue today. He said about 300 people were waiting for the library to open at 10 a.m., and the queue sometimes stretched along the front of the building to the corner of Oxford Terrace and Gloucester Street. Children’s books were “intensely popular” and there was a keen interest in adult novels, he said. Mr Fitzgerald believed about 5000 books were sold yesterday, and there were 3000 or 4000 still to be sold. Staff were adding

more books to the sale as it progressed.

The books were supplied by the Canterbury Public Libary, the Christchurch branch of the National Library, the Waimairi District Library and the Paparua County libraries.

They were either too old, were no longer popular with borrowers, or were duplicate stock. The proceeds will be divided between the libraries for administration expenses and new purchases.
