Drug lobbyist charged

PA Whangarei A Whangarei psychologist, Les Gray, appeared in the District Court at Whangarei yesterday to defend charges of possessing marijuana. An outspoken supporter of the drug’s decriminalisation, Gray, aged 45, was arrested on May 26 by the Whangarei police after a raid on his houseboat home at Duck Creek. The

police allegedly found about 90g of marijuana.

His arrest came four days after he appeared on television to debate the marijuana law reform issue.

About two dozen people travelled to the courthouse to support Gray at a court appearance on June 12.

The normal Tuesday District Court business

was postponed for yesterday’s defended hearing which was expected to take most of the day.

The Crown prosecutor, Ms Julie O’Brian, took the prosecution’s case instead of police staff. The police said the prosecutor had been called in because of the legal argument expected to occur.
