Record for Aouita
NZPA-AFP Gateshead, England The Moroccan middle-distance man, Said Aouita, collected another record yesterday as he strolled to victory in the Emsley Carr Mile. The extraorindary African repelled the threat of Kenya’s Joseph Chesire and the Olympic 1500 metres silver medallist, Peter Elliott, with a final bend burst to clock 3min 51.975ec — the fastest time in the 37-year history of the event. Nevertheless, Elliott helped England to an easy victory over Australasia and Italy in the triangular teams’ contest, the highlight of which was Dalton Grant’s high jump of 2.34 m, equalling Nick Saunders’ Commonwealth record. In contrast, the former Olympic champion, Daley Thompson, struggled to win a special three-event challenge.
