This vacancy is due to the pending retirement of Professor J T Ward. The Department is administratively part of the School of Management Studies and also plays an important role within the School of Social Sciences. It has grown rapidly in recent years, and currently has an academic staff of 16. Members of the Department have teaching and research interests covering mainstream economics, econometrics and business economics. As the Department's most senior staff member, the appointee may be required to serve as Chairperson of the Department for a fixed term. An Energy Cost Management Expert System, | which has been developed over the last ten years in association with | Price Waterhouse in the United Kingdom now needs development for | commercialisation, in response to pressing demand both within New Zealand and in world wide markets. The work on demand forecasting particularly related to electricity has been a major research interest over the past five years and exciting possibilities now exist for a complete integration of the more theoretical demand forecasting techniques with those of direct cost and use management at the operations level. The research fellow will provide a direct input to the creation of a fully developed commercial software package for direct marketing. It is envisaged that the work will provide an interesting combination of data-base and information engineering with the more usual engineering aspects of energy analysis applied to both commercial and industrial users.
