Seal shot, beheaded

PA Wellington The Department of Conservation is appealing to the public for information after a fur seal was found shot and beheaded at Red Rocks on Monday. The body of the seal was found by a member of the public who reported it to the Department of Conservation. The body was later buried. A department spokesman, Mr Jim Kidson, said shotgun cartridges were found around the seal’s body. “It was an absolutely disgusting and sick act,” Mr Kidson said.

Under the Marine Mammals Protection Act, offenders can face fines of up to $lO,OOO as well as forfeiture of vehicles and equipment.
