Surprise defeat
Wandering Eyes (Plat du Jour—Karena) suffered only his second defeat in six New Zealand and Australian starts when he was surprisingly beaten into second by another former New Zealand pacer, Albertonian, in the Jorma Kontio Three-Year-Old Pace at Moonee Valley, in Melbourne, last Saturday. Wandering Eyes, which qualified in Canterbury from Robin Butt’s West Melton stable, was recently sold by clients of Peter Blanchard’s Pukekohe stable to the powerful Bob Knight stable in Victoria, and had been a first-up winner for his new connections at Moonee Valley a week earlier in a 2:2.8 mile rate for 2380 m.
