Canterbury junior boxers lose
Two Canterbury juniors, Perry Scarlett and Jason Neilson, were beaten during the first night of competition at the New Zealand amateur boxing championships at Karaka.
Scarlett, in the 54kg division, lost to the multiple championship-winner, Michael Owen (Gisborne), on a unanimous decision, and Neilson was edged out on a 32 majority verdict by G. Seymour (Central North Island). Another Canterbury junior, Graham Cullen, was a majority points winner over R. Hamson (Manawatu), in a 42kg bout. Additional first night results.—
Senior — light welterweight, Nuku Wood (Whangaroa) beat Malita Rasmussen, majority points; David Warren (Auckland) beat Bart Birch (Auckland), points.
