Twizel caused a major upset by beating highly ranked Wakatipu, 60-59, on the first day of the South Island secondary schoolboys’ basketball tournament in Waimate. Twizel, which was seeded fourth in pool four, came from behind with a spirited display of basketball played with pace and determination, to take the match from Wakatipu, one of the tournament’s semi-final favourites. NETBALL
Bay of Plenty Coast doused the early aspirations of Canterbury and Waikato, the top seeds, during the first day oi competition at the national under-21 netball; championships in Mount Mauganui yesterday. Bay of Plenty Coast beat Canterbury, 36-34, and Waikato, 34-25. The Canterbury under 18 team fell at the hands of Wellington, 2515, in a physical encounter. The Canterbury shooters, Rochelle Krammer and Karyn Pierce, had trouble with accuracy and faltered in spite of the plentiful opportunities that Bernice Mene and Belinda Blair provided with superb defence work. Results: Bay of Plenty Coast 36, Canterbury under 21 34; Canterbury under 21 39, Otago 24; Canterbury Country under 21 31, MidCanterbury 27; Wellington
under 18 25, Canterbury under 18 15.
RUGBY LEAGUE
Auckland maintained its unbeaten record at the 15-year-old’s national rugby league tournament in Rotorua yesterday with a hard-fought 6-0 win over Wellington. Canterbury scored five tries in beating Waikato, 24-4, in the other Section A match. Results.— First day (Sunday): Section A: Auckland 26, Waikato 6; Canterbury 12, Wellington 9. Under 15 The loss of four key players did not stop the James Hargest High School under-15 rugby team from winning this year’s AMP South Island secondary schools’ tournament.
