Vigil for Elvis twelve years on
NZPA-AP Memphis Elvis Presley fans marking the twelfth anniversary of his death filed solemnly past his poolside grave in a candlelight procession. The vigil drew between 3000 and 4000 participants, the police said. The affair is the largest single event of Elvis International Tribute Week, a nine-day line-up of concerts, memorials and fan get-togethers. Presley died of heart disease on August 16, 1977. He is buried next to the swimming poo’ at his white-columned Tennessee estate, Graceland. Vigil-keepers marched single file up the drive at Graceland, carrying tapers lit from a torch fired from an eternal flame at Presley’s graveside.
Many left roses by the simple marker. Devotees began lining up at Graceland’s distinctive gates — decorated with musical notes and a rendering of Elvis — five to six hours before the procession.
By the time the ceremony began, the highway in front of the mansion was filled with fans.
