60s Up to fight Govt policies

By

MICHAEL RENTOUL

The 60s Up Movement is seeking members to fight back against Government polices on the elderly, the Christchurch chairman, Mr Adrian Nettleton, says.

The movement was unhappy about superannuation changes announced in last week’s Budget, but Mr Nettleton rejected calls for a bipartisan approach to superannuation.

He said that if both political parties agreed on a policy it could be difficult to lobby for changes. The movement, whose membership nationally was 600 — 30 in Christchurch — was mainly concerned with elderly people on national superannuation as their only income.

These people would be worse off under gradual reductions in the rate of superannuation foreshadowed in the Budget, which failed to provide relief from the effects of the recent rise in GST, Mr Nettleton said.
