About 25.0 workers at two Christchurch factories owned by MM Cables New Zealand are on I : strike over a redundancy deal. Staff at the factories, formerly owned by Associated British Cables, Ltd, and Austral Standard Cables, Ltd, are unhappy with the progress of redundancy talks after the announcement of 20 layoffs at the plants last week. The Canterbury branch secretary of the Engineers’ Union, Mr Bob Todd, said the workers voted for a 48-hour strike from 8 a.m. yesterday and would ban overtime fmm tomorrow if a redundancy package could not be settled. Negotiations with MM Cables New Zealand began last week after it announced it was closing its telephone cord manufacturing business with the loss of 20 full-time and six part-time jobs because it could not compete with imports.
