N.Z. cueists in fine form

PA Auckland The New Zealand snooker representatives, Steve Robertson, Harry Haenga and Grant Hayward, left for Australia yesterday in good touch for the annual trans-Tas-man test next week-end. Robertson and Haenga, the first and second nationally ranked players from Wellington, met in the final of the $4OOO North Shore invitation tournament at the week-end.

Robertson, an Asian Open quarter-finalist the week before, defeated Haenga, 6-4, in the best of the 11-frame tournament.

Haenga did not play as well as he did in the semi-finals to oust the professional Dene O’Kane 6-1.

O’Kane gave away 14 points at the start of each frame and was never given a chance to get into the match. Hopefully, it may be the spur he needs for the forthcoming international snooker tournament in Wellington this week. Robertson beat the Counties Open champion, Barry Moore. 6-4, in his semi-final. Results:— Quarter-finals: D. O’Kane beat T. Gorton 6-2; H. Haenga beat P. Hourlgan 6-2; B. Moore beat G. Hayward, 6-5; S. Robertson beat R. Young 6-2. Semi-finals: Haenga beat O’Kane, 6-1; Robertson beat Moore, 6-4. Final: Robertson beat Haenga, 6-4. Highest break: Robertson, 121.
