Three missing in plane crash

PA Auckland Three people are missing after a freight plane crashed into the Manukau Harbour just after take-off at Auckland Airport last evening. Divers were searching for the occupants of the plane, which crashed into the water at the western end of the runway within minutes of take-off at 10 p.m.

The plane broke up on impact. The wreckage quickly submerged in the high tide. The police said the freighter was headed for Christchurch.

Wreckage was found on the runway and the plane had been found between 50m and 100 m from the end of the runway.

Rescue vessels from the Papakura and Manukau coastguards and the Westpac rescue helicopter with divers on board headed for the scene shortly after the plane disappeared from radar screens.
