Concern for harbour and Cup
PA Wellington Safeguards for the Waitemata Harbour must be a key concern of special planning legislation for the America’s Cup, the Minister of External Relations and Trade, Mr Moore, said yesterday. Mr Moore, who is overseeing New Zealand’s possible staging of the yacht race in 1991, said he backed the views of Aucklanders .that preparations for the event should not threaten the environment or waterfront development. “Protection of the harbour, provided for in existing law, mustn’t be ripped away,” he said. “What we need is a way of keeping that in place — but providing the opportunity to get yes or no decisions on project? earlier than the present system allows.”
