How often have you wanted to see what expression the face at the other end of your telephone line is wearing? A new colour video phone on display in Christchurch allows callers to do just this. It was part of a display by Comworth Systems, a New Zealand communications company, to show the latest products from a Japanese communications equipment manufacturer, OKI. The marketing manager of Comworth, Mr Murray Thoms, said the video phone was still being tested, and would not be widely used for a few years. It would fit in with Telecom’s integrated services digital network, to be introduced in 1991. Each telephone would cost $40,000 to buy now, but Mr Thoms expected the price to drop to between $lOOO and $2OOO in three to four years.
