Successful debut

Ribofort made a winning start to his race career when he led throughout the Fulton Hogan maiden for two-year-olds at the Oamaru Jockey Club’s meeting on Saturday.

A gelding by Beaufort Sea, Ribofort is the first foal of Ribot Vain, a So Vain mare which won four races for Trevor Catterole, of Christchurch. He races Ribofort with the Leithfield trainer, Neil Coulbeck, who prepared Ribot Vain for two wins.

Coulbeck nad to scratch the promising Sim Boh Road when the colt became foot tender.

Wairio Moments, the favourite, was slow away, then got her tongue over the bit and ran out, finishing last. Her trainer, Ted Winsloe, plans to start her again at Oamaru on August 21.

“She hadn’t been above three-quarter pace and had been working in mud,” said Winsloe. The ownership of Wairio Moments was settled at about 300 in the early hours of Saturday morning. This was the number of applicants to join Wairio Racing Limited, which have the filly leased for three years. The company members have made a once only payment of $l5O, plus $7.70 for one year of membership of the Wairio Jockey Club, which promoted the venture.

The club has benefited from at least 100 new members, the Wairio president, John Carran, said on Saturday.
