Hanmer fire treated as arson
A fire which gutted a house eight kilometres south of Hanmer Springs, on Sunday evening, is being treated as arson.
The house at the Hanmer Village Motels on Midway Road was destroyed while the owner was absent. Detective Don Stewart said that the intensity of the blaze suggested that an accelerant may have been used. No natural causes such as electrical faults could be found and
no heaters had been On, he said.
The police are appealing to anyone who may have seen a person or a vehicle in the vicinity between five p.m. and seven p.m. on Sunday.
Detective Stewart said that there was no-one staying at the motels at the time.
Anyone who may have any information is asked to contact the Hanmer Springs or Rangiora police.
