Political motive in ritual killing?
NZPA-Reuter Monrovia Liberia’s former Minister of Defence ritually murdered a policeman to get human blood for a witchcraft ceremony that would help him topple President Samuel Doe, a court martial heard yesterday. It was the first time a political motive was raised during the trial of Major-General Gray Allison, once one of Liberia’s most powerful men. Allison, stripped of the defence portfolio three weeks ago, is charged with murdering officer Melvin Pyne, whose body was found with the heart ripped out on a railway track Police Inspector Henry Dickson told the court a witchdoctor had confessed that Allison had asked him to help in overthrowing Doe. Belief in magic and witchcraft is still prevalent in this West African state founded by freed black slaves from the southern r United States in 1847.
