Trio lucky in huge Lotto win
NZPA-AP Cranston, Rhode Island
Three friends bought three tickets in Lotto America and left them in a cooler for safe keeping. But a can of whipped cream, also in the cooler exploded, and destroyed two of the tickets.
Only one survived, but it was badly damaged and the trio feared Lotto officials might not accept it. But they did, which was just as well; it won a record SUS39.B million ($68.26 million). The relieved winners are Sheila Phillips, her boyfriend George Brown and George Mages, all managers at the General Dynamics electric boat division in Groton, Connecticut. The prize was the largest in the history of Lottery America, which is played in six states and the District of Columbia.
Ms Phillips found out on Monday night she had the winning numbers, but the three waited until yesterday to turn in the ticket so they could bring a lawyer along.
