Rescue group struggles

A new search-and-res-cue group which will be responsible for the treacherous Rakaia rivermouth is struggling to stay afloat because it has little money to buy radios. The Ellesmere-based group needs at least three-two-way radios which cost $l2OO each and is asking for support from the community and businesses. “The Rakaia mouth is a very hard area to get radio reception so we need good equipment,” said Constable Alan Brown, of Leeston, yesterday. Planning for a search-and-rescue group began after a Christchurch fisherman drowned in the river mouth in March.
