Croquet hopes alive
PA London
New Zealand’s challenge for the world croquet singles title is still alive after two of the four-man team qualified for the quarter-finals yesterday. The team captain, John Prince, bounced back from losing the first game of his match with England’s Robert Fulford without collecting a single point to progress to the last eight. Prince beat Fulford 0-26, 26-9, 26-0, and picked up a triple peel in the final game. Auckland’s Joseph Hogan, a favourite for the title, moved into the quarterfinals with a straight-game win over Chris Clarke, of England, 26-14, 26-0. However, Wellington player Paul Skinley bowed out, beaten 26-7, 26-7 by England’s experienced David Openshaw.
