Attack up in the air
NZPA-AAP Southampton The Australian cricket selectors were left scratching their heads yesterday as they searched to put the finishing touches to the attack for next week’s fourth test.
Australia held a 131-run lead going into the final day against Hampshire at Southampton. The tourists were 63 for two in their second innings after declaring at 343 for six in the first.
The team manager and chairman of selectors, Lawrie Sawle, had expected his bowlers to use the match for an all-out test tune-up after an easy week. Instead, Mr Sawle and fellow selector, Bob Simpson, watched as the Australians took four rapid wickets, then were subdued by a steadfast partnershhip of 143 by the Hampshire captain, Mark Nicholas, and a 20-year-old left-hander, Julian Wood.
