Women’s hockey team needs two wins

The New Zealand women’s hockey team will need two convincing wins in its final two tests against Japan in Auckland this week-end to clinch the series, but more importantly, to boost its sagging morale after two inauspicious results last weekend in WellingPat Barwick, the New Zealand coach, said yes-
terday she was not happy with the results of the first two tests — a 0-1 loss and a 2-2 draw — after New Zealand had dominated both games. “I was angry after the second test when we gave away two goals in the last five minutes after having the better of the game. Basically we didn’t score goals in either game although we had a lot of opportunities. I think
there was an expectation among the players that they were going to win the tests. The bulk of the squad had played for Canterbury and Otago last week in teams which beat the Japanese. “They went out there expecting to win rather than making the win.” Mrs Barwick said she warned the players that the internationals would be harder than the pro-
vincial games. In spite of the warning, the New Zealand team squandered many scoring chances in both tests. Three changes have been made to the squad of 16 for this week-end’s games. Kate Trolove, who received an injury last wepk-end, has been replaced by Lisa Sutherland, and Sharon Amos and Chris Madill have been
replaced by Maree Corcoran and Robyn Toomey. The New Zealand squad for the two tests is: Maree Corcoran, Elaine Jensen; Mary Clinton (captain), Kieran O’Grady, Cindy Reriti, Robyn Toomey, Lois Simpson, Lisa Horrell, Sue Furmage, Lisa Sutherland, Sue Duggan, Chris Arthur, Tiqp Bell, Leanne Birkenhead, Maree Flannery, Margaret Edge.
