Big Merino fair for Methven
A major sale of Merinos from Central Canterbury will be held at Methven in autumn.
Already indications are that 18,000 Merinos drawn mostly from the Rangitata, Ashburton and Rakaia gorges and the Waimakariri basin will be offered at the sale on March 7. This will be the first time that a combined Merino fair has been held in Central Canterbury. Previously, the stations in the district have sold their surplus stock privately or at other local sales.
A spokesman for the organising committee, Mr Hamish Innes, said vendors believed it was time to pull together and market their stock properly in a combined sale, similar to breeders in Central Otago and the Mackenzie Country. As well, the committee has organised a spring sale of fine wool sheep to be held at Methven in early December. An estimated 6000 sheep will be available.
