Fallow update

The latest research on fallow deer, including artificial insemination progress, will be explained at a fallow deer field day in Mid-Canter-bury on July 27.

The M.A.F.’s deer unit at the Winchmore Research Station, near Ashburton, has specialised in implementing new techniques for farming fallow deer. The unit’s work will be on display at the field day. Speakers will talk about handling, marketing and financial aspects of fallow deer farming during the morning session which will be held in the Ashburton Hotel. The pro-

gramme will resume in the afternoon at the Winchmore station with a tour of the deer unit. The 58ha unit is borderdyked and capable of handling red and fallow deer. Work on comparing the two species on borderdyked light land is under way.

The guest speakers will include Dr Ken Drew, of the M.A.F. Invermay deer unit, Mr Michael Rice, general manager of Mair Venison, Mr Graeme McGimpsey, manager of the largest herd of fallow deer in the South Island, and other M.A.F. researchers.
