Import woes ‘exaggerated’
PA Wellington Manufacturers are greatly exaggerating the problems caused by garment imports from Fiji, the Retail and Wholesale Merchants’ Association says.
“Continual bleatings that the garment manufacturing industry is on
the brink of collapse are quite irritating,” the association’s executive director, Mr Barry Purdy, said.
The association had reports some domestic manufacturers were late meeting winter orders. There was under-util-ised plant in the
domestic industry because manufacturers could not recruit suitable staff.
Mr Purdy said New Zealanders should remember there were significant cost benefits to the consumer in obtaining some clothing from overseas.
