Health crisis blamed on Govt
Government inaction had caused health services to tumble, said the member of Parliament for Ashburton, Mrs Jenny Shipley. “The Government has failed to make the hard health decisions and the community is paying the cost,” she said. The Government had failed to address important funding questions, which was why Christchurch and Auckland had been forced to consider cutting essential services, such as country hospitals. “It is appalling the services, including rural hospitals, may close before this important policy matter is addressed.” The Canterbury Area Health Board was being left to “carry the can” and Canterbury people would suffer, she said. The Government had also failed to address the relationship between the public and private sector for the benefit of those who need the health services.” Ellesmere people would fight to stop their hospital being closed, said Mrs Shipley.
