The viewer fears for festival spirit

A reviewer at last week’s Festival of Community Theatre believes excellence in such events is often sacrificed for competitiveness. ■Ms Lin Clark, who is also a member of the Theatre Federation, which organised the event, said she supported the spirit of festivals but a competitive one was often a contradiction in terms. There were 14 entries in the one-

act play festival, three of which will go on to the regional final. These were “Futurian,” written and directed by Bea Cheer for Drama Soc; "Revenge,” written by Howard Brenton and directed by Doug Clarke for Riccarton Players; and “This is the End,” written by Ken Taylor and directed by Peter Black for the junior section of the South Canterbury Drama League.

“Futurian” also won the theatrical, decor and drama awards. The musical award was given to “The Hobbit," the merit award to “Headline,” the comedy trophy to “Cowboy,” and “A Kind of Image” was named the best New Zealand play. The adjudicator was Mr Ewen Coleman, chairman of the Wellington Arts Council.
