Auction surprise

An auction yesterday of obsolete and surplus Canterbury Area Health Board stock surprised auctioneers and the board by its success. More than $30,000 was raised after all 340 lots sold, a Turners Auctions auctioneer, Mr Craig Robinson, said. The board’s executive manager, support services, Mr David Dawe, had predicted a return of about $lO,OOO from the sale. The better-than-ex-pected result was “excellent,” he said. “$30,000 down $3O million to go,” he quipped of the board's cost-cutting objective. More auctions would be held as storerooms filled, he said.

About 300 attended the auction, with 160 buying goods. The highest price was paid for an old slate billiard table, which sold for $3200. Other goods on offer ranged from dentist’s chairs to plumbing equipment and spittoons.
