Ieremia shines in N.Z.’s win
NZPA London New Zealand wrapped up its preparation for the World Games netball tournament with two more convincing wins at Bedfordshire yesterday. The world champion beat Birmingham, England’s leading county/ 57-19, after leading 29-10 at half-time, then beat the top club side Newcamble, 53-18, having been ahead, 26-10, at half-time.
The Waikato goal attack, Julie Carter, and the Canterbury shooter, April leremia, produced splendid performances. Carter goaled 21 out of 25 attempts against Birmingham in what the coach, Lyn Parker, described as a “very, very good performance.” leremia was more successful, notching all 17, of her shots at goal in one half of the match against Newcamble.
However, there was concern for the tourists with two players — the 17-year-old, Louisa Wall and the versatile Aucklander, Ana Noovao, having no court time because of minor injuries.
Wall has a calf muscle injury suffered in Wednesday’s match, while Noovao has a back strain. Neither injury is serious, but Mrs Parker decided to take no chances.
New Zealand’s oppon-
ents were the best it has come across in its five build-up matches in England. Newcamble included four former internationals, but Birmingham was without its two current England players.
Mrs Parker said she was happy with the standard New Zealand had reached in its lead-up to the World Games in Karlsruhe.
