Positive swab earns trainer suspension
NZPA-AAP Wagga The Warwick Farm trainer, Greg Tsolakis, was suspended on Wednesday for six months after one of his recent winners returned a positive swab. Tsolakis pleaded guilty to a charge of causing a prohibited substance to be administered to Jonchek before the gelding effortlessly won a race at Deniliquin, in Northern New South Wales, on June 24.
Stewards received notification last Friday from the Australian Jockey Club analyst that Jonchek had tested positive to the anti-inflammatory substances, Phenylbutazone and Oxyphenbutazone.
Tsolakis told the hearing he used the drug Butasyl, which contains the prohibited substances, on veterinary advice.
He said the substance was administered eight days before Joncheck raced at Deniliquin. Jonchek, which was ridden by apprentice Jodie Bain, was the second leg of a winning treble for Tsolakis that day. The amended placings robbed Bain of four winners at the meeting — a feat achieved only once before by a woman jockey in New South Wales.
