McAdam could test rivals

By

DAVID McCARTHY

The stable of Evan Rayner and Jay Parker is a regular visitor to the Riccarton winter meetings but this year the trip has been extended to take in the South Canterbury Hunt meeting at Washdyke tomorrow.

The Rayner-Parker team has a two-year-old, Free Go, in the Aorangi Handicap which should appreciate the improved conditiions underfoot from that which he faced at Trentham last week. However, an elder travelling companion, McAdam, could test the southerners in the Challenge Seeds Handicap the feature event of the day.

McAdam has not raced for six weeks and so is not set an easy task, but there are factors too against a number of his rivals.

Seve, a dashing and rather unlucky second to Noble Lyric here at his last start was once accomplished at the 1600metre distance and is still versatile enough to pose a big threat but his recent racing has been over 2000 m and further. Polacca is a middle-distance horse which has not raced for more than a month. That could work in his favour at this distance, the latest of his two successive victories being at 2000 m. Polacca has to give McAdam 3.5 kg, however.

The Stropper is a likely candidate even though he has yet to succeed at the 1600 m distance. He fought gamely against The Snob at Riccarton and is good on his best day. Free Call is lightly tried at the distance, Spardeck jumps up in class, Red Hawk may find this a shade short and Black Arrow does not win often these days. Given Dester’s upset in this race last year and the bold run by News and Views which has clearly improved with a schooling programme two starts back, the lightweights could call the tune but McAdam’s credentials are still worth

checking. He has not won a race for nearly twelve months, that being the Heathcote Handicap at Riccarton last August. But he has battled usefully in better fields than he meets tomorrow and the 1600 m seems his best distance. Terry Kennedy, freshened himself by a holiday in Australia, will take the ride. The Rayner-Parker f eam is in the care of Wayne Thomas, winner of the Riddiford Steeplechase at Trentham on Caviton and the rider of Nearco’s Flight tomorrow.

The feature steeplechase, the Teschemaker, has been robbed of much of its interest by the scratching of Ocean Guard because of weight considerations. Ocean Guard was penalised 3kg for winning the Couplands Steeplechase on this track two weeks ago and has ended up above the likely favourite, Come True, winner of the Homeby Steeplechase at Riccarton in his last start.

An improver in the race could be Son Of Jason which should have improved with his Waimate outing. Another northerner likely to make an impact is Balnacally in the second leg of the double, the South Canterbury Finance Sprint. Balnacally was unlucky in her only outing so far on her southern campaign being denied a run at a vital stage but still managing a good third at Riccarton on July 1. In an open field she could find the Bill Masters-trained Deeds Lass a formidable opponent at this distance while She Flys, Morvatan and Master Casey are others in with a winning chance.

Race 6 D 1.55 CHALLENGE SEEDS HANDICAP $7000; Cl; no allowances; 1600 m 1 82311 Polacca4 57 R Bruce Back to back wins at Oamaru and Ashburton but has not raced since June 15. Will improve with this but must be respected. 2 5272 Seve3 54 G Davison Rattled home late for second to Noble Lyric on this track 2100 m last start. Used to be strong at this distance and highly rated here. 3 43506 McAdam 8 53.5 T Kennedy Freshened since sixth, this distance, at Manawatu on June 10. Recent form moderate but good efforts this time last year included Class One win, 1800 metres, in the Heathcote Handicap at Riccarton. Hard to beat. 4 70645 Black Arrow 5 53 Running useful races but not able to top them off. Revels in bad ground. 5 61366 Free Call 1 53 R Saxton Best form over sprint distances but should handle this journey at this stage of his preparation. Consider. 6 79903 Red Hawk 6 53 P Falvey Bold late run for third, 1800 m, at Riccarton June 24. This could be on the short side but likely to be running on again. 7 21820 TheSlropper2 52.5 J Cameron Unpredictable, but bold effort for second in

the Brabazon at Riccarton entitles to respect. Distance should suit. 8 51314 Spardeck 7 51.5 B Quayle (a) Fourth in slightly weaker company at Waimate but that track may not have suited as well as this one. Up and comer and upset chance. 9 86693 Dester 10 50.5 Better run at Waimate last week. Surprised in this last year with more weight and should be considered. 10 70933 News And Views 9 50.5 P Richards Bold third here 2100 m two starts back. Looks an upset chance. Race 7 D 3.10 COUPLANDS PIES HANDICAP $4800; C 3; 1200 m 1 22013 Balnacally 10 55 R Bruce Useful third (Warden winner) at Riccarton July 1 in first run since the autumn. Will be improved and could go close. 2 83531 Careless Whisper 16 55 Overdue clearance of maidens at Waimate. Capable of winning another at short distance. 3 41032 Deeds Lass 18 55 Good run second-up at Wanganui on July 4. Likes to run handy apd will be hard to beat. 4 57280 Delightful Dame 7 55 C Johnson Form disappointing and seems to prefer good tracks. Take on trust. 5 8807 Maltese Knight 8 55 T Kennedy Off the scene since May. Races well freshened and useful record on the track. Upsetter. 6 70660 Master Casey 13 55 D Anderton (1.5) Usually bold on the fresh side and upsetter. 7 31573 Morvatan 12 55 R Saxton Sound third to Endicott and Ballesteros at Ashburton June 15. Trials winner since. Improved and in with a chance. 8 Mr Wakefield 2 55 Scratched 9 00106 Pass The Salt 15 55 S Hetherington (4-5) Smart maiden winner here two starts back and not disgraced last time. Place chance. 10 77080 Precious Girl 5 55 M Brown (3) Form disappointing and take on trust here. 11 5310 She Flys 6 55 G Davison Shock failure last time out at Timaru on July 7 in first race since February. Better than that and with a chance to settle could be a big danger here. 12 017 Special Treat 11 55 Surprise winner here two starts back but not so impressive up a grade last time. Others preferred. 13 77402 Te Kopi Bay 17 55 P Richards Useful efforts over all. Disappointing effort two starts back was second-up and went a bold race here July 8. Bolter. 14 84869 Tune's Image 9 55 P Ayres Fair effort last time out but place chances preferred here. 15 90080 Misty Sands 4 55 S Allen Hard to recommend on form. Balloted. 16 70807 Top Man 3 55 Fresh but others preferred. Balloted. 17 95000 Silver Song 1 55 B Quayle (4.5) Speedster which may go boldly but needs scratchings. 18 0000 Immunity 14 55 D Wadley No form in this campaign.
