New comedy series stars Hannah Gordon
Successful women can be both high-powered and feminine, says Hannah Gordon, who plays bank manager Belinda Braithwaite in “Joint Account” (starting tonight at 8 on One). Gordon considers the two traits do not have to be mutually exclusive. “Authority comes from within, not from shouting,” she says. Although Belinda Braithwaite would appear to have it made with a successful career, children at university and a supportive partner at home, she is dissatisfied. She is fed up with the rat-race and up like a man in a skirt.” Her assistant bank manager, Ned (John Bird), firmly believes all bank managers should be men and that the manager of this particular branch should definitely be him.
Belinda’s plan to give up the banking life and become a housewife seems simple enough, but it strikes a snag. Up to this time her husband, David (Peter Egan) has stayed at home to do the daily round of housework,
meals on wheels and Citizens’ Advice Bureau volunteer work. David is quite content with life around the home and is not so sure that he wants to return to his former engineering job.
