School calls on experts to show wrestling holds

By

BARRY CLARKE

A Christchurch secondary school has called on experts to show its pupils correct wrestling holds after a junior boy was injured emulating television’s controversial “Superstars of Wrestling.” Wrestlers from the Canterbury Amateur Wrestling Association will address Linwood High School’s assembly this morning, outlining the dangers of trying to copy what is screened on the popular Wednesday tele-

vision series. “The school is taking a responsible role,” a police youth officer, Constable Hugh Campbell, said yesterday. Constable Campbell became involved a month ago when a pupil, aged 14, was hurt by another boy who applied a hold. “Wrestling is 0.K., but it has to be done in a controlled environment. That’s why we’ve got a couple of wrestlers to put on a demonstration. “They will show the

right, and some not so right techniques. “Some kids will not take any notice of the advice, but if it gets through to one, then that will have been of use.” However, Constable Campbell said he did not support calls from some parents of children in the North Island to have “Superstars of Wrestling” banned. It was up to parents to supervise their children’s television watching habits, he said.
