School to close after 127 years
Little Akaloa School will close at end of the second term this year after 127 years of providing schooling to Banks Peninsula children. . The recommendation to close the school was passed at a recent meeting of the Canterbury Education Board. The general manager of the board, Mr Keith McNeil, said the school had five pupils, with one child in Form 2 and no likelihood of growth. While the necessity to
close the school was regretted, the closing had been generally accepted by parents as inevitable, Mr McNeil said. He said the community was naturally concerned at the effect the closing would have on the bay and hope the school would reopen. The minimum number of pupils required was nine. The board will not take any immediate steps to transfer the property to the Education Department for disposal.
