Row pleases some
the continuing row between Mr Lange and Mr Douglas has been greeted with glee by the National Party. "The Government is consumed by faction fighting between people pursuing personal agendas,” said the Leader of the Opposition, Mr Bolger, yesterday. “David Lange and Roger Douglas have been vying for the limelight in
another round of destructive political brinkmanship.” Mr Lange offered the “caring leader” line, he said, with promises to increase family support to the poor and extend accident compensation-style benefits to cover sickness. Mr Douglas was still promising “jam tomorrow” in another version of his “Better
Way” book of 10 years ago. He said Mr Lange’s message would sound good to the constituency in which Labour was in danger of losing to the New Labour Party. “The staggering circus in the Beehive has become a dangerous distraction from the wider world where New Zealand must earn a living,” Mr Bolger said.
