Police reject claim
The Auckland police last evening rejected reports that the fatal Herne Bay rest home fire was deliberately lit by a resident with a history of starting fires. A Television New Zealand news item said a former psychiatric patient admitted to the Terwindle Convalescent and Rest Home had a history of pyromania. Detective Inspector Stan Keith, of the Auckland said investigators had interviewed all witnesses and
checked residents of the home and were not aware of anyone with such a history. Meanwhile, the investigation continues into the fire which killed six people. The Fire Service has isolated an electric wall heater as the centre of the July 10 blaze. The D.S.I.R. is examining.the remains of the heater. Mr Keith said that at this stage the police could find nothing that suggested the fire’s cause was suspicious.
