The Beau praised
The Beau, a good performer in the south this season, earned praise from Australian critics with his second in the Winter Cup at Rosehill last Saturday. The Beau was described as unlucky not to win by his rider, Mick Dittman. The horse was badly disappointed for a run at the 200 metres, and had to be severely checked by Dittman to<switch course at that point. Dittman said after the race that The Beau was a
“two mile race horse,” encouraging connections to set the horse for the Newcastle Cup and major spring events such as the Metropolitan and perhaps ‘the Melbourne Cup. He is to be in the care of Fred Wilson who made the headlines last spring through the deeds and ambitions of a Straight Strike colt, Run Straight Run. The only jarring note for the Wingatui-trained horse’s success last Saturday was a reference by a
leading Sydney writer to his sire, Beaufort Sea as “standing at White Rohe Lodge, at Mosgiel” and “while not well known in Australia is the sire of Canterbury Star which raced with success in Brisbane a few years ago.” Beaufort Sea stands at Inglewood Stud in Kaiapoi and Canterbury Belle was his star offspring which won the Elders Handicap. The Beau was taken to Australia by her ownertrainer Diane Bowbyes.
