FCL 155th in ‘Fortune’ list

PA Wellington Fletcher Challenge has jumped to 155th place in a ranking of the financial performances of the 500 largest industrial companies outside the United States prepared by the American-based “Fortune” magazine. FCL said yesterday “Fortune” had given the company information on the ranking for 1988, which was up from 234th the previous year and from 259th in 1986. Royal Dutch-Shell Group, an Anglo-Dutch oil giant, retained its No. 1 spot for the twelfth straight year, according to a recent report on the magazine’s “International 500” list. An FCL spokesman said the magazine drew on turnover and profit figures reported by the company, which is New Zealand’s largest, for the year to June 30, 1988. FCL had a bottomline profit of $532.3 million, up 50 per cent on the previous year. It was reported earlier that “Fortune” had found the total profits of the 500 industrial companies surveyed jumped nearly 50 per cent from the year before. Japan dominated the list with 159 companies, while Britain had 74 companies. The Japanese carmaker, Toyota, moved into the No. 2 spot for the first time.
