MONTE NEAL will probably be disappointed that his Lincoln College team will not get a fourth crack at Hornby in this season’s senior rugby competition. The young College three-quarter has scored 16 tries this winter and 12 of them have come against Hornby. He scored four times in each of the three matches. Undoubtedly Hornby will be pleased that it has seen the last of College this season. In the three outings Lincoln College scored 46 tries and 237 points while conceding one try and 12 points. ZIMBABWE CRICKET funds will get a lift later this year when a glittering array of test players contest an international treble wicket competition there soon after the end of the English season. New Zealand will be represented by John Bracewell and Martin Crowe and one other being sought to complete the team, with Richard Hadlee probably unavailable. Players confirmed for the four-day competition are lan Botham, Graeme Hick and David Gower (England), Allan Border, Steve Waugh and Craig McDermott (Australia) and Malcolm Marshall, Michael Holding and Viv Richards (West Indies). Teams will bat and bowl for 20 overs each with a maximum of eight overs for any one bowler.
FOURTEEN KIWIS ran onto the International Stadium in Rotorua before last Sunday’s rugby league test against Australia, instead of the usual 13. The fourteenth man was Mita Mohi, who led a 73-strong group from the Mokoia Island taiaha in part of the pre-match entertainment and as backing for the New Zealand team’s haka. Mohi played for Canterbury as a robust forward between 1960 and 1973, and represented his country at the 1972 World Cup tournament in France. Since returning to Rotorua, Mohi has been prominent in Maori culture. A COMMERCIAL on 3ZB in recent months referred to Wiremu Maunsell scoring a try for Canterbury. Although Maunsell has appeared in all but one of Canterbury A’s fixtures this season, the left wing from the Sydenham club had not registered a try for Canterbury until the match against Marlborough last Wednesday. Ironically, the commercial had since been replaced by another featuring a different Canterbury representative.
