Mixed fortunes in chess games
Cashmere High School experienced the highs and lows of fortune in the latest rounds of “The Press” chess teams’ competition. The strong Christchurch Boys’ High School team accounted for Cashmere, 5-1, a result which suggests Christchurch Boys’ will be a real threat to the title-holder, Burnside, but Cashmere bounced back the next day to beat Christ’s College, 5-1. Only Chris Cullinan saved a whitewash for Christ’s College. Although College was without a win, it had performed creditably against Burnside and Shirley and had drawn with St Andrew’s. Chris Wright and Simon Swallow maintained their perfect records for Christchurch Boys’. Papanui has emerged as the dominant team in zone one of the B grade, but competition is more even in zone two where all six teams have achieved competition
