Pioneer women win third league title
The Pioneer women’s volleyball team clinched its third consecutive southern league title by winning its final game over Aranui Smash, 3-1, at Pioneer Stadium last week-end. The game was unspectacular as both sides made frequent errors. Although Dianne Weir played well for Pioneer and Angela Stojanovic had a strong attacking game for Smash. Pioneer won the first two sets, 15-8, 15-9, conceded the third set 11-15, before settling to take the fourth, 15-10. Pioneer also took the title in the men’s competition after comfortably beating Scorpions. Pioneer conceded the first set 9-15 but had little problem taking the ensuing sets, 15-7, 15-6, 15-10, for a 3-1 margin. Attention will now be focusing on the national club championships at Chase
Stadium in Auckland which start on July 26.
The New Zealand under-19 women’s team will be touring the South Island in the August holidays and will spend time in Christchurch playing against club sides. This tour is replacing the proposed tour of South Australia. The Hornby men’s team, currently leading the B grade competition, will challenge Canterbury University and Otago University for a place in the men’s A grade next week-end.
