Life imprisonment

PA Wellington William Eden Annear, aged 23, unemployed, who earlier pleaded guilty in the District Court, Mt Maunganui, to murder, was yesterday sentenced to life imprisonment when he appeared in the High Court. Defence counsel, Mr Mike Lance, said yesterday that Annear had insisted on pleading guilty. He had been reminded several times to instruct

counsel but he maintained his stance. A medical report indicated he was fit to plead. ,Mr Justice McGechan said the law permitted only one sentence for murder. Accordingly, he jailed Annear for life. The charge related to an incident at Wanganui on June 15, when Annear fatally stabbed Dickson Fore, aged 50, a shearing contractor.
