Care of handicapped

Sir, —I am concerned at the proposed policy to abandon the public care for our mentally and physically handicapped. The Minister of Health, Helen Clarke appears ignorant about the time and effort that these people require. Surely it is obvious that these people need considerable care and assistance to be able to live. The supervision of these people will be put in the hands of their family, who may not have the patience or tolerance to cope with the stress that these people innocently create. Helen Clark seemingly fails to show compassion or understanding when she ignores the love and attention that these people need, and as a welfare society we should provide. Our country is regarded as a welfare society, but the idea that we look after our citizens in need does not appear to be in practice. We, as taxpayers, part with hard-earned cash for such services that we are entitled to be provided with. Why then do our taxes increase as the services due to us continue to disappear? —Yours, etc., (Miss) L. H. COLLINS. July 6, 1989.
